Excursion to Mont Saint-Michel + Cancale + Saint-Malo

Legend has it that in 708, the Archangel Michael appeared to the Bishop of Avranches and commanded him to build a chapel on the rock. The vision was repeated three times. Thus began the story. First a chapel. Then a monastery. Then a fortified abbey fortress. The island was never captured by the English during the Hundred Years' War. In the Middle Ages, pilgrims from all over Europe came here. Mont Saint Michel became a symbol of spiritual protection. Later, as often happens, it became a prison. Then it was almost forgotten, and only in the 19th century was it restored, and the monument regained its cultural significance. It has some of the strongest tides in Europe.

Cancale and its coastal oyster farms. At low tide, a spectacular view opens up of hundreds of hectares of marine farms. Today, the town remains an important center of oyster production, and local farmers supply the best restaurants in France and Europe. Here, you can taste the freshest oysters right by the sea.

Surrounded by mighty granite walls, the city seems to hold within itself the breath of centuries and the history of seafarers, privateers, and explorers. From the ramparts, panoramas of the endless English Channel open up, vibrant and ever-changing. The ocean isn't somewhere on the horizon; it's right there, almost right there.
